| Abstract: | Shaoxing Chinese, one of the Wu dialects in China, has eight citation tones and a number of tone sandhi rules which interact opaquely. In this paper we show that an analysis cast in classic OT runs into problem. We then examine these processes in the context of Candidate Chain Theory (McCarthy 2007) and show that this theory permits a straightforward analysis.
