Abstract: | Phase alternation in Rotuman analyzed in OT in McCarthy (1995, 2000) will be reanalyzed within the framework of Natural Derivational Phonology proposed in Lee (2009a). In Natural Derivational Phonology constraints apply in compliance with the natural ranking of universal ranking principles (URP¡¯s), letting evaluation constraints assess their outputs. In Rotuman, constraints, under the direction of URP¡¯s, combine to bring forth a monosyllabic foot of the words belonging to the morphological category ¡°incomplete phase¡±. |
