Abstract:Avoidance of the Marked

This paper proposes that Halq'emeylem (Central Coast Salish)

'continuative' allomorphy is an instance of a-templatic

reduplication. The non-reduplicative allomorphs are derived

by making changes to the stem, thus avoiding the reduplicant

altogether. This occurs just in case the base contains marked

structure. The ranking is similar to that for normal

application in reduplication. Avoidance of the marked is simply

another way that phonological constraints affect the shape of

morphemes, and in this case, the stem, in true a-templatic fashion.
