The Phonological Lexicon

This paper is a chapter prepared for a forthcoming handbook on 
 Japanese Linguistics edited by Natsuko Tsujimura. It presents an over-
 view of the authors' recent work on the structure of the phonological 
 lexicon in Optimality Theory. New evidence and arguments regarding 
 impossible nativizations, the relation between the internal structure 
 of faithfulness constraints and stratal indexation, and ranking con-
 sistency across strata are presented in the last two sections.
