Abstract:From a pragma-semantic perspective, the effect of the Dutch modal verb 'moeten' 'must' on the proposition is closely examined in various tenses. This results in a striking pattern of actuality entailment. Present perfect tense (Ik heb dat moeten betalen 'I have had to pay that') and perfect past tense (Ik had dat moeten betalen 'I should have paid that') combined with 'moeten' result in a positive and a negative actuality entailment respectively. We explain how these forms and their meanings are produced and interpreted correctly with the help of bidirectional Optimaity Theory.
