Abstract: | Harmonic Serialism (HS) (McCarthy 2010), a derivational version of OT, will be reviewed. It will be demonstrated that the property of GEN that is asserted to make one change at a time may engender undesirable consequences. The phonological analyses in HS will be reanalyzed within the framework of Natural Derivational Phonology (NDP) proposed in Lee (2009a). In NDP, constraints have only to apply in accordance with the universal ranking principles, letting evaluation constraints assess their outputs. |
