Abstract: | This dissertation is an extended argument for a form of grounded phonology. The argument depends on confronting the ontogenetic question of phonology, that is, the question of how phonology grows and develops in the brain. A review of neuroscientific literature demonstrates that a modally-dependent phonology is far more biologically plausible. Additionally, linguistic analyses in an Optimality Theoretic framework demonstrate that a phonetically grounded phonology is still capable of explaining phonetically unnatural patterns in natural language. |
