| Abstract: | Optimality Theory (OT), a framework initially developed to account for phonological phenomena, has also been used for morphological analysis. This chapter discusses several OT-based approaches to the morphology-phonology interface and morphology proper. It summarizes the basic tenets shared by these approaches as well as the differences among their mechanisms. It analyzes both their advantages and problems with regard to phenomena such as phonologically conditioned allomorph selection, blocking and extended morphological exponence, and syncretism. Realization Optimality Theory is argued for in particular. |
