Abstract:This dissertation describes in a comprehensive way what sibilants are from a phonetic and phonological perspective, as well as in which ways they pattern as sibilant inventories in natural languages. Based on empirical evidence, several typologies of sibilants are constructed predominantly in OT and BiPhon-NN. This dissertation not only centralises the existing knowledge about sibilants, but predicts also what inventories are possible and explains why.
