Abstract: | This paper follows Smolensky (1996) in attributing developmental differences between receptive and productive phonological competence to the operation of a single Optimality Theoretic grammar. On the basis of evidence from developmental speech perception, however, it is proposed that structural constraints apply to both lexical and surface representations. Differences between receptive and productive competence are captured as differences in ranking between two sets of faithfulness constraints: those that apply in perception, and those that apply in production. |
