| Abstract: | Prosodic Trapping in Catalan ROA-32 catalan.* Teresa Cabre' (UAB) & Michael Kenstowicz (MIT) In the formation of Catalan hypocoristics, LL'H structures truncate to 'H while HL'H shortens to L'H (cf. Isabe'l -> Be'l but Bartom'eu -> Tom'eu) suggesting that a light syllable trapped between heavies parses with the following heavy to create an iamb in an otherwise trochaic system. An OT analysis of ranked constraints is proposed that outputs a mixed system with (L'H) iambs beside ('LL), ('H), and ('HL) trochees. |
