Abstract:An Optimality Theory Study of Nasals in Japanese

Kevin Heffernan

University of British Columbia, Vancouver

This is an Optimality Theory study of the behaviour of nasals in coda

position in Japanese. A diachronic approach is taken by first examining

the treatment of nasals in Sino-Japanese loan words in Old Japanese, and

then applying the grammar to the modern Japanese verb and mimetics

paradigms. The 'Sympathy Approach' (McCarthy 1998) is used to overcome

the problem of opacity. Evidence is also taken from elision in the

Yamato stratum. The under-specification of the nasal in coda position

is then questioned using the results obtained.
