A peculiarity of Aranda, spoken in Central Australia, is that stress

placement appears sensitive to the presence/absence of an onset as

well as to the number of syllables in the word.

In this paper I put forward the claim that the violation of

the constraint ONSET may be significant not only at the level of the

syllable but also at higher levels of the prosodic hierarchy - i.e.

ONSET (Syll), ONSET (Ft), ONSET (PrWd). Specifically, I propose that

ONSET (Ft) plays an important role in Aranda stress, and I demonstrate

how this constraint interacts with others such as FtBin, Lx=PrWd, and

Align to provide a full account of the idiosyncrasies of this stress

system.
