Complex conditions on object agreement and preposition

insertion in Palauan, conditioned by aspect, specificity, number,

and humanness, are shown to follow from a modified version of

Diesing's Mapping Hypothesis interacting with (ranked with

respect to) two economy (faithfulness) principles, Avoid Movement

and Avoid Insertion. The radical difference that aspect makes in

the treatment of objects is shown to fall out if one economy

principle is re-ranked in the perfective aspect.
