Abstract: | In Dihovo Macedonian, the high vocoids and rhotics show predictable behavior with respect to syllabicity and moraicity. Both can be syllabic. Furthermore, when syllabic, both are moraic as revealed by a mora-counting stress placement rule. However, only high vocoids are sonorous enough to be moraic outside of syllable nucleus position, i.e., when found in coda position. Coda /r/, in contrast, does not affect stress placement. In this paper, I provide a formal analysis of Dihovo predictable moraicity and syllabicity. I claim that moraicity and syllabicity are autonomous prosodic concepts which can be subject to independent sonority restrictions: it is possible for a segment to be sonorous enough to surface as syllabic, but not sonorous enough to be moraic, and vice versa. This analysis also allows an elegant account of the fact that a segment may be a possible syllable peak under one set of conditions (such as adjacent to a consonant) but an impossible syllable peak under other conditions (such as in hiatus). |
