Abstract: | This article argues in favour of maintaining Consistency of Exponence (CoE, McCarthy and Prince 1993, 1994) as a restriction on the Generator function. It argues that a minimalist theory of input-output relations and faithfulness follows from these this principle alone. There have been some recent attacks on CoE as an inviolable principle, but these can be shown to be unsuccesful; furthermore a substantial body of the literature taciltly assumes CoE -- it is hard to formulate some of the key constraints without it. We explore some of the consequences of CoE, in particular with respect to the analysis of Derived Environment Effects. |
